For example the production of ice cream, chocolate and other thermally sensitive formulations, it is possible without any problem on an ENTEX extruder with total special steel processing part. Especially for bread, cake and pastries, dairy products, starch and sugar possibilities are unexpectedly opening-up . Due to the modular construction there is also the possibility of adding colour and flavour stuffs in various quantities and at several different places to the food products.

Blending Technology for the Plastic Industry

The Requirement

During the recent decades the plastic processing industry has developed rapidly. The foundation-stone of this development have been and still are the diverse technological innovations which focus more and more on the required properties. This has resulted in an increase in the variety of raw materials.

ENTEX have recognized this at an early stage. We develop and perfect equipment which are to the individual requirements of the industry. High quality products can only be produced reliably and economically by creativity and competence.

A clear example: We received an inquiry from the plastic processing industry regarding the solution of the following problems when processing TPU. There, a production line produced a thermally very inhomogeneous extrudate. This caused not only long starting times, but also very often long dead times during cleaning. This resulted in material damage and a reduction in quality and quantity of the final product.

ENTEX replaced a conventional 2-stage-system with processing and discharge extruder by a single-stage-planetary roller extruder in modular construction (M2). Now the customer is able to produce a thermally homogeneous extrudate and is able to reduce the starting times to 20 per cent.

The excellent self-cleaning property of the ENTEX planetary roller extruder guarantees improved economies: long service life and short batch changes, a large scale of material processing without mechanical reset and pigmentation directly into the extrusion process. By this smaller equipment, being much easier to handle, the output capacity of the total production line can be doubled.

Therefore, potential customers will become satisfied customers.

The Solution

A possibility of direct feeding and compounding in front of the calender consists of a two-stage extruder. Here, the melt is plasticized, dispersed and homogenized in a planetary part. Via a vacuum chamber the outcoming banks get discharged. And by producing a vacuum and due to the heavily rugged surface of the material the volatile matters of the bank will be taken off. The second stage essentially serves as the pressure generation device. Due to the different flow rates in the discharge screw, however, non-homogeneity can arise with sensitive materials. These are produced by different shearing forces, which are not evenly dispersed through the whole material.

Still today, this system is used for pelletizing and at the calender for special feeding tasks.

ENTEX is following the philosophy, that the shortest way is the best way. The art of modern processing technique is to leave out expensive intermediate steps that damage the material.

Due to the modular construction, in most cases the discharge stage can be omitted.

By connecting several modules, not only the processing length is quadrupled and thus the bandwidth of the materials to be processed essentially enlarged, but also degassing of the plastificate during compounding is possible without an intermediate stage. Measurement of pressure and temperature as well as the injection of viscous components is possible by the same method. The ENTEX radial pelletizer with slot liner allows a direct feeding of the calender in an optimal manner. For this reason an ENTEX planetary roller extruder is located in front of the world biggest calender.

Conceived Innovation

The invention of the planetary roller extruder was the initial ignition with regard to a rapid development of extrusion technology. ENTEX made the decisive step into a new dimension during the Eighties by consequent further development and perfecting of this system. The planetary roller extruder represents the principal item of compounding technology, controlled by the latest process technique.

The principal item of the planetary roller extruder is an ENTEX planetary gear with an extreme toothing width and a helix of 45°. At the rotation of the central spindle the planetary spindles are rolling on the central spindle and the cylinder assembly and rotate like planets. During this process the material will be caught and by the plunge of the spindle teeth into the corresponding tooth space the material will be drawn-out into thin layers and brought forward by means of the helix. All steps of the development are based on the new production process of electro-carbon machine.

Modular system with extremely thin wall thickness with possibilities of pressure and temperature measurement, injection of viscous components and the degassing between the modules allows compounding technology in new dimensions, unknown until now.

The variation in the diameter of the stop ring as well as the combination of the planetary spindles from module to module allows the adjustment of the system to nearly every compounding process. The invention of radial pelletizing, based on the planetary system and use of the fundamental advantages of this system facilitate the thermally most gentle pelletizing technique.

Based on the minimum possible L/D-ratio materials can now be pelletized which could not be pelletized before. Dissipation of energy into the material, caused by hole plates, can be nearly excluded.
